Start Preparing for Your Labor Day Travels

Pat Goss’ tips for getting your car ready

As many of us hit the roads for one last weekend of summer fun, Pat Goss provides a checklist to make sure your car gets you to the beach or mountains. Getting home…well, that depends on if you want to go back to work or not.

Checklist

__ Tire wear

__ Suspension

__ Steering

__ Brakes

__ Exhaust system

__ Fluid leaks

__ Adjust tire pressure (and spare)

__ Windshield wipers

__ Lights

__ Safety equipment

Alright, getting your car ready for a road trip during the hot weather, or anytime for that matter, means it should go into the shop. And it should be raised in the air. That gets it up where you can see things that normally can’t be seen when it’s on the ground.
You’re going to look at
o Tire wear … on the inside
o Suspension
o Steering
o Brakes
o Exhaust system
o Fluid leaks and various things that may be coming loose or showing times of wear
o Adjust tire pressure, including the spare
o Top everything off
o Make sure the wipers, lights, and safety equipment are functioning properly

And you have minimized the possibility of problems on the road.

Breakdown of this weekend at Bristol

Dale Jr. will drive #88 this weekend in both series

JR is revving up for a fast weekend

On May 21, 2010, Dale Earnhardt Jr. fought for a 7th place finish at Bristol. Only five months later JR will be behind the wheel of  #88 in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series at Thunder Valley. In his last 17 races at Bristol, Earnhardt has finished 11th or better 14 times.

“In 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Bristol Motor Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has scored one win, seven top-five finishes and 12 top-10s” said Hendrick Motorsports.
“The 35-year-old driver has an average finishing position of 11.4 and has completed 98.6 percent of all laps he’s attempted (10,365 of 10,513 total). He has led 743 laps at the .533-mile oval. His 11.4 average finish at Bristol is a personal best for the driver in the Sprint Cup Series.”

In the nationwide race, JR will be driving the Realtree Outfitters/CARCHEX paint scheme on the #88 and is racing with Pops (crew chief Tony Eury Sr.), whose son helped JR to a win at Daytona in 2004.

On the world’s fastest half-mile, anything is possible.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road and Your Phone in the Trunk

Designed to lure and then catch habitual texters, law enforcement officers have commissioned texting only lanes on your local highways and roadways. Warning, don’t be fooled by this social distraction on your morning and evening commutes, these new texting only lanes come complete with stop and go traffic, fender benders, crash site obstacles and steep fines.

  • The reported #1 source of driver distraction today is the use of a wireless device.
  • Phone use while driving extends a driver’s reaction time by as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent.
  • Drivers that use cell phones are 4x more likely to be involved in crashes that may injure themselves or others.
  • Driving while using a cell phone decreases the amount of brain activity devoted to driving by as much as 37%.
  • About 28% of all crashes in 2008 were caused by drivers who admitted to texting.

30 states, including Maryland, Maine and New York have passed laws making texting while driving illegal with fines up to $500 if caught. See if your state enforces no texting while driving with the Govenors Highway Safety Association chart.

In order to stay away from the fines and danger, try locking your cell phone in the trunk and endure the regular traffic to work…away from your designated texting lane.
